Roswell is famous for the 1947 UFO crash - constantly mentioned in the X-Files & many other places. They take it in good humour & you have to check out the UFO museum on the main St
Its a cool little town in the middle of no where but is close to heaps of places.
Whites Sands missile site is a day trip & is amazing by itself but the cool thing that I didn't know about was the space museum there. I got to see Buzz Aldwins helmet from the moon walk - very cool. There is heaps of other space history to see also.
Carlsbad Caverns is another amazing day trip. You spend over an hour walking down under ground seeing all the workings from when they dug out the bat shit. down the bottom you are 800 feet underground & the caves down there are massive. The funny thing is once you get all the way down there some clown has built a food court & gift shop along with a lift back to the surface - only in america.
My other fav trip was to the town of Lincoln - this is Billy the Kid country. I got to sit in the judges chair where he sentenced Billy the Kid to hang. Billy skipped town soon after I left a bullet hole in the wall on the way out.
